Privacy

Your card sort is anonymous – our system does not store anything that could identify you.

You have the option of entering your name and/or someone else's name. This allows you to have the names printed in your downloadable report. Names are NOT stored by the system.

What we do save are the results of each Importance and Skill sort. We can then look at the aggregated data to find out which capabilities people see as most/least important for different roles; and the capabilities in which people feel most/least skilled.

If you have any questions/concerns please email us at organisation.development@mpi.govt.nz

Importance Sort

The Importance Sort asks you to sort the cards according to how important each capability is to achieving success in a role.

What it might be useful for

This sort can be useful when you are creating or updating a Position Description; developing a Performance Plan; or considering what capabilities may be important in your current role or a role you aspire to.

Skill Sort

The Skill Sort asks you to sort the cards according to how skilled a person (you or someone else) is in each capability.

What it might be useful for

This sort can be useful when creating a development plan with regard to someone’s current or future role. If it is completed alongside an Importance Sort you will get a combo Importance-Skill report which helps prioritise development needs.

Why do I need to distribute the cards evenly across the 3 columns?

You may have heard the saying, If everything is important, then nothing is important.

The requirement to spread the cards evenly with 8 or 9 cards in each column, is designed to force you to think carefully and order the capabilities relative to each other. For example:

  • There may be 12 capabilities that are important, but the Importance Sort forces you to decide which 8 or 9 are most important.
  • There may be 13 capabilities that someone is not very skilled at, but the Skill Sort forces you to decide which 8 or 9 are the least skilled ones.
  • A high performing person may be very skilled in many of the capabilities, but the Skill Sort forces you to decide which 8 or 9 they are most skilled in.
